Honoring the Loíza community from Puerto Rico and the fight for equity and social justice. This artwork was first inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement, conversations with youth served in my past workplace and the Puerto Rican artist Daniel Lind.
I emphasize the facials of a "black" person with a wide nose, large lips, "imperfect" teeth- Puerto Rican traits that have been criticized by many.
I honor these physical features with the golden veil of the Vejigante, as I believe that the things that people criticize us the most are the most beautiful and worthy of glory.
